Mumbai, July 2025 — Jio Platforms, the digital arm of Reliance Industries, has launched JioPC, a virtual desktop service that transforms televisions into cloud-powered personal computers. This initiative aims to address the digital divide in India, where over 70% of households own a TV, but only 15% have access to a personal computer.
JioPC operates through Jio’s set-top box, available with broadband plans or separately for ₹5,499 (~$64). Users can access a cloud-based PC interface by connecting a keyboard and mouse, enabling tasks like browsing, using productivity apps, and attending online classes.
The service offers a virtual desktop with 4 vCPUs, 8 GB RAM, and 128 GB storage, running on Ubuntu Linux with the Cinnamon desktop environment. Pre-installed applications include LibreOffice, Chrome, GIMP, and Sublime Text. Users can also access cloud-based tools like Microsoft 365 through the browser.
Currently in a limited free trial via waitlist, JioPC does not support peripherals like webcams or printers, though these features are expected in future updates.
Analysts view JioPC as a strategic move to increase digital adoption in under-penetrated markets. Tarun Pathak, research director at Counterpoint, noted, “The idea of using the television set as a computer via the set-top box is innovative, but JioPC will require strong consumer education to scale adoption.”
The launch aligns with Reliance’s broader ambitions in AI and digital infrastructure. Reports suggest ongoing discussions between Reliance and OpenAI for potential commercial partnerships, positioning JioPC as a potential distribution layer for advanced AI services in Indian homes and businesses.
